Hello everyone! Thanks to a fellow forum member I’ve just received my first vintage Omega. It’s actually my first Omega overall, but now I need some advice. But if your advice is truly targeted at vintage Omega watches, the problem is there is no established market. And there are a huge (and growing) number of Frankenwatches out there. And the cost of a full service is from 20% to 50% of the value.
Most people, myself included take the watch to be serviced to an AD so it can be sent to the Omega service center. Some ADs have a certified Omega watchmaker that can do the service which is nice because it’s usually a faster turnaround. IIRC Omega warranties the service for 2 . I find the "service" threads for vintage Omega that I've read so far, most disturbing. I have a couple of Speedmasters: late 60's and early 70's that I would love to bring back to life. I've been reading before I start a post in the vintage thread asking a bunch of questions. After seeing the 1948 re-release shown at Basel this year got this itch to pick up some vintage Omegas. Few questions I would like to ask from those with.
My goals are 3 fold: To give someone who might need to send their watches back to an OEM a general idea of the process, the cost, the timeline, and expectations about how your watch will be returned to you. To give a comparison of the level service between two popular watch manufactures. So if the hardware is rough or uneven, feels flimsy, hollow or even (gasp!) plastic, the bag is most likely a fake. All hardware pieces on an authentic Louis Vuitton bag, from clasp to rivet, bear the brand’s engravings, crisp and clear. The metal is durable, evenly colored and will not have an overly shiny gold tone.
