The Tucker Vise is a modern redesign (patented in 1992) of classic patternmaker's vises that .The Tucker vise is made primarily of ZA-12 material which is stronger than cast iron, less brittle and much lighter. The vise jaws are 8" x 13" and open 12". The vise weighs 50 lbs. One of the handy features of the Tucker vise is the automatic opening. I'm thinking of getting a Veritas Bench with a Tucker Vise. I would appreciate any thoughts as to if the Tucker would meet most needs without the addition of a second vise such as a Veritas twin screw vise.
I was browsing my Instagram the other day and noticed a post in which someone had some stock clamped up using what looked like an old Pattern Maker's vise but the vise handle had Veritas on it. After some searching it would seem that Veritas did make this vise and it was called the Tucker Vise. The Tucker Vise is a modern redesign (patented in 1992) of classic patternmaker's vises that closely resembles the Emmert Vise and the Oliver No. 1. This one was made in 2009 and features the more durable leather jaw pads instead of the cork pads on the early version. I have a LV face vise with wood jaws and a LV shoulder vise and like them both. The face vise is large and I like the wood jaws although if I was going to buy another one I would get the one they sell with a quick release.
I know of folks with the LV Tucker vise and the small Emmert clone. The fit and finish is better on the Tucker but the Emmert clone is not junk by any means. The real difference is the Tucker is aluminum which is lighter and cheaper to ship.
The vise has 13" wide jaws that open 12" and have a 4" throat depth. It has double guide rods, a 1" main screw, and it weighs 50 lb. The most impressive feature is the full rotation and tilt capability – the vise rotates 360° and tilts from horizontal to vertical and can be locked at any combination of points in the two planes. It does indeed appear to be the no-longer-available Lee Valley clone of the famous Emmert Patternmaker's vise. It was called the Tucker vise. I now own my second original Emmert vise, which Veritas took inspiration for the Tucker, after making the mistake of selling my first one. I never experienced sellers remorse like it before and immediately went on the hunt for my current vise. Seeing that the Tucker vise sold new in the US for 0, what makes it so prized now?
