I've been on "the list" at my local AD for a Z-Blue Milgauss for about 9 months, but was never given a specific time frame. I'm just hoping they don't get discontinued while I'm waiting. About a month after registering my interest in the Milgauss, I asked about a turquoise dial OP for my wife for an upcoming milestone birthday. For many of us the "waiting list" doesn't exist, the local market is dominated by flippers. A one-and-done buyer must either spend a disproportionate amount at the AD before gaining a Rolex or else go Grey. This list of wait times for various models is interesting. Naturally, it varies a lot by dealer and how much they "like" you - but it does categorize how easy/difficult it is to get various models. FYI, Kai is Jenny Elle's husband (her videos are in English, his in German).
Even if you have never bought anything from the AD, I think you should still be able to get a watch if you visit a number of times and are enthusiastic about watches. Might take many months to over a year (or longer for a few models) but a good AD can distinguish who is a fan and who is a flipper. I have had my name down with both AD's for a sub-date since March 2019. The AD who stocks only Rolex will only allow me to be on the list for one watch, so if I wanted an Air-King, I would have to be removed from the list for the Sub-Date. There are multiple lists at the Rolex AD. The list are most likely correlated to your purchase history. Your wait time for any watch will depend on which reference you want, your purchase history with the store, and timing and luck.

Was told that there is no longer a waiting list.only interest list. The SE hinted to me that having a purchase history with the shop will help and directed me to the GP display.
