The Omega caliber 2500 is, at its core, an ETA movement, modified by ETA. It is originally born as the ETA 2892, and then modified to become the Omega Caliber 2500. So with that said, unlike what the name might suggest, it is not an in-house movement. But then again, what exactly is a truly in-house . The Omega Calibre 2500 is a very good movement with proven reliability. Most newer Seamaster watches use an 8500 (or a variety of it) which is considered by most to be a better movement. That said, you’ll have to pay up to get a newer one with the latest movement. Could anyone guide me as to how to identify the correct calibre 2500 generation on an Omega? Is it publically known through serial numbers or should you contact the service centre? Thanks!

Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean + Calibre 2500 Co-Axial Movement. There was nothing completely new about the calibre 2500 movement when the Planet Ocean launched in 2005, though the movement had slowly been refined since 1999 when Omega purchased the co-axial technology from the legendary George Daniels. The original calibre 2500 was a modified ETA 2892 fitted with a Co-Axial escapement (still beating at 28,800vibrations/hour), while the Omega Co-Axial chronograph presented in 2003 was based on a Frédéric Piguet movement.

It is a great watch that is not over bearing, has great looks, wears nicely, and is both sporty and can be somewhat dressy as well should you wish so. My issue is with the 2500 movement. Is it worth paying a premium for a watch with what amounts to a “rough draft” of the co-axial movement?
